Lithuania owes much to the rich cultural currents of central Europe: it once shared an empire with neighbouring Poland that stretched from the Baltic Sea almost to the Black Sea. Its capital Vilnius boasts a Baroque Old Town that is the largest in Eastern Europe and praised as the 'New Prague'.
Location:
Lithuania lies in the eastern Europe, on the coast of the Baltic Sea. In the north Lithuania borders with Latvia, in the east and south with Byelorussia, in the south-west with Poland and with the Kaliningrad region of the Russian Federation.
Climate:
Like its Baltic buddies the Lithuanian climate is relatively temperate, with a slight edge that gives it that fresh eastern European charm. June to August see pleasant daytime highs around 22°C (57°F) with moderate rainy periods. Between November and March it rarely gets above 4°C (39°F), with mostly below zero (32°F) temperatures in January. Slush under foot is something you have to cope with in autumn, when snow falls then melts, and in spring, when the winter snow thaws.
Money:
National currency is the Lithuanian Litas (LTL). It is pegged to the Euro at the exchange rate of EUR 1 = LTL 3.4528. Cash payments will be accepted only in the Litas, however many shopping centres and other service outlets take credit cards.
Cuisine:
Lithuanian cuisine consists mostly of the traditional Lithuanian dishes . Major influences include the Polish cuisine and the Scandinavian cuisine.
The most used vegetable in Lithuanian recipies is the potato, while the most used meat is pork, which can be fried, brined, smoked and jerked. Another important part in the Lithuanian cuisine is the cottage cheeses, of which many sorts are made: sour, sweet, filled with caraway, hard and soft.
Tipping:
Some restaurants add a service charge of 7%, but if you are particularly happy with the service you can up that to 10%. Tipping other services such as taxi drivers isn’t normally expected, but obviously appreciated.
Language: the state language is Lithuanian. All correspondence and official communication is conducted in Lithuanian.
