About Bratislava
Not only is Bratislava the largest city in Slovakia, it also serves as the state capital. Furthermore, Bratislava is the seat of the National Council of the Slovak Republic, the Government of the Slovak Republic, national ministries and the other central bodies of the state administration of the Slovak Republic.

It is situated in the centre of Europe in the southwestern part of Slovakia. It borders with Hungary in the south and with Austria in the west. The town spreads like a fan on both banks of the Danube River, and at the foot of the Low Carpatians at. Due to its position on the border between the mild and warm climatic zones, it ranks among the warmest spots in Slovakia with an average temperature of 9,9°C. It has 1976,4 hours of sunshine a year and an annual total rainfall is 527,4 mm. Bratislava is the most populous city in the Slovak Republic and its population is 450 000.

Major industrial center, Bratislava is known for shipbuilding and the manufacture of furniture, chemicals, tobacco products, musical instruments, woolen goods, and leather products. Points of interest include an 11th-century Gothic cathedral that was restored in the second half of the 19th century; the ruins of the former royal palace of Hungary, on a hill overlooking the city; a 13th-century Franciscan church; the town hall, a 13th-century edifice; the Comenius University of Bratislava (1919); the Slovak Technical University in Bratislava (1938); and the Slovak Academy of Sciences (1953).city's outskirts, are castles and vineyards. The Old Town, with its cobblestone streets, invites hours of exploration relieved by fashionable cafes, bars, and restaurants.

 

Transport:

Most of places and sights attractive in tourist terms can be found directly in the city centre, in the pedestrian zone. In case you would like to see some attraction at a longer distance from the centre, we recommend you to use city transport. In Bratislava, there is a dense network of public city transport lines running in regular intervals according to schedule. The schedule (times of departure) of the respective line can be found on any stop of city collective transport.

City transport connections in Bratislava are provided for by bus, tram and trolleybus lines whose last departures from their terminal stops are at about 11:00 p.m. First morning connections start running only at about 4:20 a.m. Most daytime connections, however, start running only closely before 05:00 o‘ clock in the morning.

 

Shopping:

Bratislava has several large shopping malls. Two of them are located near the centre and accessible by car or public transport. Aupark across the river from the Old Town and Polus on Vajnorska. Both malls have a variety of shops of all kinds and multiplex cinemas.

A little further away from the centre, you will find the Avion Shopping Park (near the Airport)

Souvenirs stalls are located in the Main Square of the Old Town and on Hviezdoslavovo Square in front of the Slovak National Theatre throughout the year.
